Feed from farms and livestock trade information. For up to date prices and availability of livestock and feed Contact Sue Woof 015396 21343, bandswoof@btinternet.com  Prices - The fat lamb market is riding on the back of the buoyant conventional trade which has seen a good export trade due to the state of the pound. Current prices (as at 8/1) is £3.40 per kilo deadweight – although this seems quite good for the time of the year it is best to check out the conventional trade in the auctions which often can match or improve on this price. It was good to see ABP raising the beef price to £3.10 once again. Many producers will have seen their milk price decreasing by 2ppl. Let’s hope this is a short term blip.

Community Supported Agriculture comes to the Lakes. We a group of people looking to establish a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project in Kendal area. A CSA is a way of creating strong links between the farmer and consumer. The consumer agrees to support the farmer by buying his vegetables for an agreed period of time; this guarantees the farmer an income, whilst giving the consumer a more direct relationship with the farmer and access to locally grown veg every week. We have already established strong links with Growing Well a local organic producer based at Low Sizergh barn. We are hoping to set up the first stage of the CSA by offering their vegetables to interested local people. In the future we would like to expand to buy or rent local land, and establish links with other local growers to expand the number of people we can reach. In a preliminary meeting we have already recruited 40 local people keen to become part of the scheme. If you would like to become a member or have suggestions about local land that we could use you can contact us at yourlocalfarm@googlemail.com or call Kate on 01539727928. One of our members is setting up CSA selling organic meat from conservation grazing stock based around the South Lakes, for further information contact Bill on 07880718624.

Consumer Research:
Would anyone be interested in forming a small group to work together to ask questions about organic food  from the dunhumby Academy of Consumer Research, which provides farmers and small to medium sized food and drink manufacturers with subsidised access to the dunnhumby database – the food purchasing behaviour of 1.2 million UK households. (In other words, to see how to steal some of TESCO’s customers). Please contact Kate if you would like to be involved.
