Name: GROWING WELL LTD description: Growing Well is a social enterprise based on Low Sizergh Farm, an organic dairy farm on the edge of the Lake District. We are a non-profit making company that supports the recovery of people with mental health problems and their return to work, through their involvement as volunteers in our commercial organic production business. We grow a wide range of organic produce on five acres, with some indoor cropping space. We sell wholesale to Low Sizergh Barn and local box schemes. We offer horticulture training courses with an emphasis on organic growing, in collaboration with Kendal College, and we host school groups and other educational visits; we have classroom space in one of our three yurts on our fields. Name: HOWBARROW ORGANIC FARM description: Howbarrow is a small, mixed holding of 7 hectares which grows organic salad crops and an extensive range of culinary and medicinal herbs within polytunnels. A small flock of traditional sheep and cattle provide a quantity of organic meat, with free-range organic turkeys also available at Christmas. Produce is available directly to your door, countywide, through a highly commended box scheme [supplying almost 500 boxes per week] and a mail order scheme – see website for further details. Hen and duck eggs available throughout the year, goose eggs available in season. We also produce table birds; chickens throughout the year, geese and turkeys are seasonal. We run flocks of Scottish Blackface and Greyface ewes, producing Greyface breeding ewes, finished lambs and stores. Rare breed pigs (Large Blacks and Welsh) are kept for pork, bacon and sausages. During 2005 we intend to introduce rare and traditional breeds of sheep and cattle, in addition to developing organic vegetable and soft fruit production.
