Name: CROFT FARM-MEATS description: The Croft is an organic smallholding of 15.5 hectares, in the village of Houghton, just north of Carlisle, and 21 hectares beside the river Eden, just north of Armathwaite. Longhorn cattle, a traditional Cumbrian breed raised at The Croft, live out all year. In the winter they are fed on hay made at The Croft. A small flock of mule ewes is kept and the cross bred Suffolk lambs are sold direct. The lamb, like the beef, is delicious. Geese are kept for the Christmas market. The vegetable garden and the small orchards are in-conversion, selling fruit and vegetables to meet increasing demand at the farmers’ markets. The farm shop stocks a wide range of quality produce – fresh meat, butter, cheese, chutneys, bread, cakes (much of it sourced locally) and home-grown vegetables. There is wheelchair access and a disabled toilet. The rustic tea room serves delicious home-cooked meals using our own meat and vegetables (open 10.00am–5.30pm daily). Greystone House was the overall winner of the 2003 Countryside Awards, organised by the Cumberland News. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided trail around the farm and see various conservation projects in development, part-funded by the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.
