description: The Watermill is a working mill producing a wide variety of biodynamic and organic flours. Most of our wheat comes from two biodynamic farms. We also mill rye and barley. In our mill shop we sell all our flours in all sizes, together with a wide range of organic products for baking and cooking. In our organic Tearoom [Les Routiers Café of the North for 2002] we cook and bake seasonal, tasty food supporting local producers.

description: Howbarrow is a small, mixed holding of 7 hectares which grows organic salad crops and an extensive range of culinary and medicinal herbs within polytunnels. A small flock of traditional sheep and cattle provide a quantity of organic meat, with free-range organic turkeys also available at Christmas. Produce is available directly to your door, countywide, through a highly commended box scheme [supplying almost 500 boxes per week] and a mail order scheme – see website for further details.
Howbarrow belongs to the Soil Association Organic Farms Network, and visitors are welcome to walk round the Farm Trail. There is also an established farm shop, open 10.00am–5.00pm on Wed & Sat, [winner of the Organic Farm Shop Award, 2002] which sells a range of fresh and frozen vegetables, wholefood goods and meat.

description: Low Sizergh Farm is a family dairy farm of 106 hectares with an award winning farm shop, Low Sizergh Barn, craft gallery and tea room [with viewing window into the milking parlour]. Produce from the farm includes organic Kendal Crumbly and Creamy cheeses, milk, and ice cream made from our own milk. Delivery is available to caterers and retailers in the area. Growing Well, a therapeutic horticulture project, is based at the farm, cultivating delicious organic vegetables. There is a trail through the beautiful countryside surrounding the farm, part of the Soil Association’s Organic Farms Network.

description: Andrew Whitley founded The Village Bakery, Melmerby, in 1976. It became one of the country’s leading organic bakery brands, specialising in artisan breads, made by hand and baked in wood-fired ovens. He stepped down from The Village Bakery in 2002 to concentrate on teaching real baking to individuals and teams, and writing and campaigning on food and health. He is chair of the Soil Association’s Processing Standards Committee and a member of the Standards Board.
Bread Matters runs baking courses at The Village Bakery and elsewhere for enthusiastic amateurs and professional cooks. Its ‘Together we Rise’ programme uses breadmaking as the focus of team development for groups from both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors. Bread Matters also undertakes research and advocacy for better food and health.
