Baking Courses

BREAD MATTERS Ltd

Andrew Whitley founded The Village Bakery, Melmerby, in 1976. It became one of the country’s leading organic bakery brands, specialising in artisan breads, made by hand and baked in wood-fired ovens. He stepped down from The Village Bakery in 2002 to concentrate on teaching real baking to individuals and teams, and writing and campaigning on food and health. He is chair of the Soil Association’s Processing Standards Committee and a member of the Standards Board.

Bread Matters runs baking courses at The Village Bakery and elsewhere for enthusiastic amateurs and professional cooks. Its ‘Together we Rise’ programme uses breadmaking as the focus of team development for groups from both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors. Bread Matters also undertakes research and advocacy for better food and health.

THE WATERMILL

The Watermill is a working mill producing a wide variety of biodynamic and organic flours. Most of our wheat comes from two biodynamic farms. We also mill rye and barley. In our mill shop we sell all our flours in all sizes, together with a wide range of organic products for baking and cooking. In our organic Tearoom [Les Routiers Café of the North for 2002] we cook and bake seasonal, tasty food supporting local producers.

We also run breadmaking courses. Please contact us for details.
